Tugas Softskil Bahasa Inggris Bisnis 2 Bulan Ke 4

Relative clauses add extra information to a sentence by defining a noun. They are usually divided into two types –defining relative clauses and non-defining relative clauses.

Defining relative clauses

Look at this sentence:
  • The woman who lives next door works in a bank.
‘who lives next door’ is a defining relative clause. It tells us which woman we are talking about.

Look at some more examples:
  • Look out! There’s the dog that bit my brother.
  • The film that we saw last week was awful.
  • This is the skirt I bought in the sales.
Can you identify the defining relative clauses? They tell us which dog, which film and which skirt we are talking about.

Relative pronouns

Relative clauses are often introduced by a relative pronoun (usually who, which, that, but when, where and whoseare also possible)

With defining relative clauses we can use who or that to talk about people.
  • She’s the woman who cuts my hair.
  • She’s the woman that cuts my hair.
And we can use that or which to talk about things.
  • The dog that bit my brother.
  • The dog which bit my brother.
It is also sometimes possible to omit the relative pronoun.
  • This is the skirt that I bought in the sales.
  • This is the skirt which I bought in the sales.
  • This is the skirt I bought in the sales.
In this sentence ‘skirt’ is the object of the verb (buy). ‘I’ is the subject. When the relative pronoun is the object, it can be omitted.
  • The film we saw last week was awful.

  •  BUT The dog bit my brother. This is not possible because the dog is the subject of the verb, ‘bite’.

   14. This is the book that I Have been looking for all year.
   15. William whose brother is a lawyer, want to become a judge.

   1.       George is the man chosen to represent the committee at the convention. 
   2.       All of the money accepted has already been released.

   6.       John’s wife, a professor, has written several papers on this subject.

   9.       The number of students have been counted is quite high.

Connection / Conjunction
    
           Conjunction is a conjunction used to connect two or more words, two sentences or more in order to be a sentence that have the meanings and be understood.
  
Exercise 33: Because/Becase of
1. It was difficult to deliver the letter because the sender had written the weong address on the envelove.
2. We decide to leave early because the party was boring.
3. Rescue attempt were temporarily halted because of the bad weather.
4. They visitedtheir friends often beacause they enjoy their company.

Rumah Unik Ini Berdiri di Tengah Jalan Tol

Seorang kakek tua bernama Zhang Ling dan istrinya menolak untuk meneken persetujuan untuk pindah dari tanah dan rumahnya. Tanah dan rumahnya yang berlokasi di Wenling, Provinsi Zhejiang, itu harus digusur karena akan dibangun jalan tol.

Mr. Zhang menolak pindah karena uang ganti rugi yang diberikan oleh pemerintah China nilainya dibawah harga pasar dan jumlahnya tidak mencukupi untuk membeli rumah baru.

Jadilah rumahnya tetap berdiri di tengah jalan tol. Coba kalau di Indonesia, hal ini pasti akan digusur paksa. Atau dibuat kebakaran agar nantinya bisa digunakan alasan "penataan".

China memang komunis dan terkadang kebijakannya tangan besi, tapi mereka ternyata lebih menghargai hak-hak asasi warganya. Sungguh Indonesia harus belajar dari China.

56 Tahun Tenggelam di Danau, Motor Ini Kembali ke Pemiliknya

Kalau memang jodoh memang tidak kemana. Pepatah itu dialami oleh pria ini. Setelah 56 tahun berpisah dengan motornya, kini dia dapat bertemu kembali dengan motor lamanya itu.

Pria asal Minnesota itu pun kini sedang berbahagia. Soalnya dia kini bertemu kembali dengan motor tuanya, sebuah NSU 251 OSL lansiran 1938 yang telah 56 tahun tenggelam di danau.

 Dikutip dari motorcycle, Kamis (27/12/2012) cerita bermula ketika di tahun 1956, Wyman Ailie membeli sepeda motor untuk anaknya, Dean Ailie yang berusia 15 tahun dari seorang petani. Motor Jerman itu dibawa ke Amerika oleh sang petani setelah dia kembali dari Perang Dunia II.

Lalu, pada bulan Desember, Dean Ailie pergi berjalan-jalan dengan teman-temannya. Dan dalam perjalanan pulang, dia memutuskan untuk mengambil jalan pintas melintasi permukaan beku danau Big Swan Lake.

Tapi ternyata, jalur yang dilewatinya ada es yang retak. Alhasil Dean dan motor barunya itu pun jatuh ke air. Menurut laporan, udara yang terjebak dalam jaket kulit Ailie membuatnya dapat ke permukaan untuk kemudian diselamatkan oleh sepasang nelayan. Namun motornya tenggelam.

 

Dan bulan lalu, pada 29 November 2012, hampir 56 tahun setelah Dean nyaris tenggelam motor itu ditemukan oleh nelayan bernama Ken Seemann yang berniat untuk mencari ikan mas tapi jaringnya malah menangkap sesuatu yang berat, sepeda motor Jerman lawas.

Karena kecelakaan Dean pada tahun 1956 adalah berita yang cukup besar di daerah pada waktu itu, maka tidak butuh waktu lama bagi masyarakat untuk membantu Seemann mencari hubungan motor dengan Dean yang sekarang berusia 71 dan masih tinggal di daerah itu. Dean pun kembali bertemu dengan sepeda motor kesayangannya itu.

 

Uniknya, meski berpuluh tahun tenggelam di dasar danau, sepeda motor itu ternyata masih dalam kondisi baik meski sudah dilapisi karat yang membuat tangki bahan bakar memiliki beberapa lubang, tapi silinder mesin motor ini masih kering dan ban masih berisi udara.

Setelah bertemu kembali dengan motor ini, Dean awalnya ingin merawat kembali motor ini.

Tapi Seemann dan mitra usahanya Jeff Riedermann bertemu dengan seorang kolektor motor bernama Ron Miller yang mengatakan bersedia membersihkan dan menjadikannya seperti sedia kala. Dean pun setuju menyerahkan sepeda motor itu ke Miller.
